Course Description

Lymphedema Management of the Head and Neck," is an intermediate level course that will provide the foundational knowledge and skills to evaluate and provide treatment for lymphedema of the head and neck. Medical Speech-Language Pathologists are recognized as key team members in the management of individuals with head and neck cancer and can bring value into the realm of lymphedema management. Learners will take a deep dive into the lymphatic system and discover how lymphedema can impact the swallowing mechanism and communication. This course will address considerations of lymphedema management especially for head and neck cancer as well as unique cases with solutions that therapists may face such as placement of tracheostomy or PEG tube. This course is open to speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, COTAs, physical therapists, and PTAs. Clinicians will complete the course with the knowledge and skills to determine appropriate intervention strategies to provide optimal care for individuals with lymphedema of the head and neck.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Review the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system specific to the head and neck.
Describe consequences of the presence of lymphedema in the head and neck region.
Discuss evaluation methods appropriate for lymphedema in the head and neck region.
Recognize indications, precautions, and contraindications of complete decongestive therapy for individuals with lymphedema of the head and neck.
Select appropriate manual lymphatic drainage techniques to the head and neck.
Summarize necessary modifications in complete decongestive therapy for individuals with head and neck lymphedema.

Mallory Moore

SLP.D, CCC-SLP, CLT-LANA

Dr. Mallory Moore is a certified speech-language pathologist and LANA certified lymphedema therapist from Ozark, Missouri. Dr. Moore earned her clinical doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology from Nova Southeastern University in 2018, Masters of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Missouri State University in 2011, and Bachelors of Science in Communication Sciences Disorders from Missouri State University in 2009.
Since 2011, she has worked in various settings including Outpatient Rehabilitation, Long Term Acute Care, Acute Care, and Inpatient Rehabilitation. Her primary setting throughout her career has been in Outpatient Rehabilitation where she focused her clinical practice towards serving individuals with dysphagia and voice disorders. She primarily works with individuals with head and neck cancer including total laryngectomy care, various dysphonia cases, vocal cord dysfunction, and neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and Parkinson’s disease. She is a mentor and provides training for colleagues in laryngoscopy, videostroboscopy, FEES, MBSS, and TEP management.
Dr. Moore is a per-course faculty member at Missouri State University and Nova Southeastern University. Additionally, she provides consultative work on system-wide development of medical speech-language pathology intervention that includes supporting the speech-language pathologists knowledge and skills needed within the medical environment. Dr. Moore serves on the board of directors for two non-profits, Ozark Neurological Foundation and Lary’s Speakeasy. She has been a review committee member for the head and neck cancer division of the 2022 ASHA Convention and the 2021 and 2022 Leadership Development Program.

Reviews

For the anatomy and physiology portion, it would be helpful to pair technical terms with more accessible terms more often. I often felt that Mallory was reading portions of the slides, but not necessarily enough information or explanation to improve learning. I learned the material better by re-watching and pausing the course to be able to fully read the slides and look information up on my own to get a better understanding of the material. Mallory is clearly a skilled and knowledgeable clinician, and I think the course will improve as she learns to utilize the microphone, camera angles, explanations, etc more effectively. Having patient handouts and cheat sheets of the locations/ some more concise and legible references to look at after the course would have been very helpful. If they are developed- is there a way that those of us who took earlier versions of the course could get such materials retroactively?

This was an incredibly helpful course. I am a PT and have been a practicing CLT for 25 years. I have only recently in the past year been getting an increase in head and neck lymphedema cases due to a severe shortage of CLTs in Memphis and West TN. I have been searching for courses geared specifically to HNC that would teach me more appropriate bandaging techniques. Most of all, I have been desperate to learn how to specifically address intraoral swelling which so many of my patients experience. This course provided me with ALL the things that I was searching for! I am excited to take my newfound skills back to the clinic on Monday and hit the ground running. My patients are excited, as well! Thank you!

I felt another hour or two could have been dedicated to further practicing of the sequences for individuals who may not have been familiar with the types of hand motions, terminology, etc. I love the step by step pictures of the sequences provided in the manual, this was very helpful for generalization of newly learned skills and for us with aging memory! haha I also believe in possibly more case studies to further reinforce and where we break up into groups and apply for increased knowledge and discuss as a group. Could be helpful. Difficult with the online portion but for those in person. I really enjoyed this course

I think a hands on course will be more effective than streaming. While I appreciate the option and do feel like I learned a lot concept-wise, having taken a hand on manual therapy course, I feel like being able to have direct feedback on pressure would be useful.
