Children with cleft lip and palate present with a variety of speech, language, and resonance disorders. As a speech language pathologist in the school setting, it is highly likely you will encounter a child with a cleft lip and/or palate and be involved in their care. During this introductory course, we will review anatomy and physiology of speech mechanism and the impacts a cleft lip and palate has on speech and resonance. We will discuss evaluation and treatment for articulation disorders related to cleft lip and palate and highlight specific therapy techniques which can be used for children with compensatory speech errors. Videos will be incorporated for illustration and case study examples.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss normal velopharyngeal function and causes of velopharyngeal dysfunction
- Identify speech errors associated with cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction
- Demonstrate appropriate methods for perceptual assessment of articulation and resonance
- Apply appropriate speech therapy techniques for articulation errors
- Determine the need for speech therapy vs. referral for surgical intervention

Great presentation! Just some comments: I was interested to learn more about VP closure and the muscles involved so that I can provide as much parent/caregiver education as appropriate, but I'm sure it wasn't discussed in depth due to time constraints. Also some of the images (examples of a fistula, uvula, tonsils, etc.) did not appear, as I printed my manual in preparation for the seminar, but that is ok -- I was still able to follow along! Overall, great information in regards to speech techniques that I will surely try during my practice. Thank you
