Therapists are challenged by patients with neurodegenerative diagnoses such as Parkinson's, Huntington's, Prion Disease or ALS. Providing appropriate therapies within our standard practice of care can make a difference in the outcomes. We must know the impact on cognition and swallowing, the impact of medications before we can decide what therapy tools/techniques will address their cognitive, swallowing and quality of life goals. This seminar will provide information on the diagnostic process, theories on development of the disease, symptoms that present in early as well as later stages. Medication protocols will be discussed as well as CAM or complimentary alternative medicine. Medications may improve quality of life for our patients but may also become ineffective. Numerous therapy techniques and tools available will be presented with rationale for their use. Recommendations for modified diets, liquids or even NPO may not be acceptable to the patient and/or family. As therapists, we need to know what options are available and educate/inform our patients and families to allow them to make decisions that work for them. Options will be addressed as well as concerns with waivers and need for appropriate, thorough documentation.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • List specific symptoms of ALS, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Prion Disease
  • List the impact ALS, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Prion Disease have on cognition and swallowing
  • Identify possible adverse side effects of medications and CAM
  • Analyze exercises and tools to construct an appropriate therapy plan for the ALS, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Prion Disease patients
  • Explain options for nutrition/hydration to assist patients and family in their decision making for modifications and quality of life

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2023

It would have been interesting to see the presenter use some of her tools (e.g chewy tubes) to strengthen oral muscles.

Very enjoyable! The CIAO Studio was a treat for an in-person experience. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Thank you! I'll be back.

It’s a VERY LONG 2 full day course, which surprises me that it’s not worth more credits. I would suggest maybe including interactive activists, even if it’s just polls. Something to help keep. Learning more engaged and involved. Overall a ton of material covered in two days with the speaker being very knowledgeable.

Less emphasis on oral motor exercises given lack of basis in evidence based pratice. Otherwise it was very informative
