Course Description
A two-day hands-on interactive splinting course designed for therapist and other health professionals interested in advancing their splinting skills! This course is excellent for occupational and physical therapists. The course includes a review of upper extremity anatomy, various pathologies and treatment techniques. Static, dynamic, and static-progressive splinting techniques are demonstrated. Each participant will manually fabricate commonly used splints, both static and dynamic. A comprehensive manual is provided with appropriate splint patterns and a detailed reference manual. In-class supervision and multiple lab instructors are provided during the design process. Participants receive course materials to allow the attending therapist to immediately apply the information in his or her clinical setting. This is a fun and enjoyable way to learn about splinting!
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Educate the therapist on biomechanics of the hand, wrist, and forearm
- Provide pathomechanics of common hand injuries as they relate to splinting
- Provide a thorough review of tissue healing in the upper extremity
- Demonstrate splint designs and splint fitting techniques commonly used
- Provided evidence based splinting models and patterns
- Introduce current splinting materials as they apply to the upper extremity
- Provide the most up to date splinting methods available
Edward Fiore
M.Ed., OTR/L, CHT
Ed Fiore is a practicing Occupational Therapist and a Certified Hand Therapist. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Education Technology. Edward Fiore has over 14 years of experience in orthopedic rehabilitation with concentration on evaluation and treatment of upper extremity injuries. Treatment specialization includes custom splint fabrication and manual treatment techniques for traumatic hand injuries. Edward Fiore demonstrates splinting models that are “design simple” and “patient friendly.” He offers unique ideas to low profile models with minimal cost to the clinic.
Edward Fiore is a national speaker and educator. He lectures on many orthopedic topics, including management of common hand injuries, nerve compression, overuse syndromes, and splinting techniques. He presented at the national meeting for American Society of Hand Therapist, Florida Hand Society on various topics, including a new static-progressive splinting model. He also guest lectures at several universities. Edward Fiore is an active member of the American Society of Hand Therapists, and the American Occupational Therapy Association. His hands-on expertise, advanced technology skills, and lively sense of humor makes his course both educational and entertaining.
