Course Description
This intermediate level workshop offers PTs, OTs, ATs and Chiropractors an opportunity to gain new knowledge through lecture and a focus on the hands-on application of electrotherapy, including acute and chronic pain treatment approaches.
Participants will leave the course with a contemporary research-based knowledge of the contraindications, dosing and application of electrical stimulation based on tissue healing and desired therapeutic outcome. The workshop will include active lab sessions to reinforce the concepts of choosing treatments, waveforms and parameter selections targeted for specific impairments. Scenarios covered will include treatments to modulate pain, reduce muscle spasm, retard the formation of edema, and improve muscle performance.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply an evidence-based approach to the integration of electrotherapy into the overall rehab plan
- Identify common myths and errors in parameter selection and application of electrotherapy
- Discuss elements of acute and chronic pain
- Apply electrotherapy terminology necessary to design safe and effective electrotherapy treatments
- Dose and apply electrical stimulation based on stage of tissue healing and the desired therapeutic outcome
- Choose appropriate electrotherapy treatments, waveforms and parameter selections to treat specific impairments
- Administer electrotherapy treatments to modulate pain, reduce muscle spasm, retard the formation of edema, and improve muscle performance
- Examine the physiologic effects, indications, and contraindications related to the application of electrotherapy
- Apply knowledge of indications, physiologic effects, contraindications, and contemporary research to deliver safe and effective electrotherapy treatments
