Course Description

This session will explore the scientifically-based practice of progress monitoring, a set of activities which assesses student performance. Progress monitoring will also be examined from the lens of understanding intervention effects, including the fidelity of implementation when specially designed interventions are assigned to instructional partners for delivery. Participants will experience how progress monitoring works in the context of both the therapeutic and IEP processes, the benefits and challenges of progress monitoring IEP goals, and how progress monitoring is particularly valuable in curriculum-based IEP development, documentation, and effectiveness assessment.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize key features of progress monitoring in special education
  • Apply progress monitoring concepts and procedures to student performance on IEP goals
  • Generate a progress monitoring plan, graphic display of student data, and data-based IEP progress report for parents
  • Determine effectiveness of interventions and how to modify intervention/treatment plans in response to student performance and implementation fidelity data

Lauren Holahan

Teaching represents the majority of my effort and development as a UNC faculty member. As a provider of professional development and continuing competence activities for occupational therapy practitioners working in North Carolina public schools, as a lecturer in NC institutes of higher education preparing future occupational therapy practitioners, and as presenter at local, state, and national professional meetings, I have grown in my roles as an assistant professor in the UNC-CH Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and as the Occupational Therapy Consultant to the NC Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI). My work in clinical practice, administrative activities, and professional service has not been as pervasive as my teaching efforts; nonetheless, I have also had key opportunities to contribute to the occupational therapy and occupational science, the University, and the public in all of these components of faculty service.
