    Appropriate Disciplines

    • Occupational Therapist
    • Speech Language Pathologist

Course Description

Exercise is the key ingredient to rehabilitation and dysphagia rehabilitation is no different. The skilled clinician must have a variety of treatment tools available to facilitate an effective exercise program. Ten years ago, VitalStim Therapy introduced NMES as such a tool and it has proven very effective. This course will take the VitalStim Provider to a new level using NMES for dysphagia therapy. The course will review the core concepts underpinning successful use of NMES in the dysphagic patient. Current research will be reviewed to explore how the NMES parameters such as frequency, phase duration and duty cycle can be changed to maximize impact. Participants will learn about the benefit of using up to 4 channels of stimulation and will learn how to sequence the stimulation between channels to mimic a normal swallowing sequence. In addition, two new modalities will be reviewed and practiced: sEMG Biofeedback and sEMG triggered electrical stimulation. This dynamic course will focus on hands on skills. The participants will work with the latest technology combining VitalStim, NMES, sEMG and sEMG triggered stimulation.

Disclosure: This course covers information that pertains to the effective and safe use of VitalStim Plus equipment. Participant must be a VitalStim Therapy Provider prior to attending this advanced level course.

    Reviews

More case studies for specific diagnoses, we commented on the types of patients we treat (e.g.., PD, dementia, CVA) but did not discuss much how treatment could differ across these diagnoses. I would have also liked more specific guidelines for setting modifications based on specific exercises; I liked learning how to set the parameters for the Mendelsohn and would have enjoyed more examples.

    This was very helpful. Thanks.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Dec 2023

perhaps consider giving participants more than 2 weeks to complete course as it is difficult to manage with FT work schedule/other obligations, perhaps 3-4 weeks if possible?

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2023

The early slides on explanation of dysphagia as a valve system, principles of exercise, and review of neuroanatomy were not needed in my case. I would have liked the entire session to focus on the research and use of the VitalStim Plus device.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2023

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT LEARNERS KNOW TO HAVE THE REGULAR VITALSTIM ELECTRODES AND MORE THAN ONE PAIR TO PRACTICE ON THEMSELVES OR FAMILY MEMBERS

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2023

Wonderful presentation overall! Some of the sEMG portion went quickly (i.e., as she was changing the targets quickly I was having trouble keeping up!) but I just plan to go back and rewatch it again. Very worthwhile course, and I look forward to using the device in my clinical practice!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2023

Good presenter. Thank you. The djo website and downloads are a bit confusing from past experience. They need to date the new versions. VS/NMES is a good tool to use in dysphagia tx in conjunction to exercises and PO intake trials. SWALLOW SWALLOW SWALLOW .

    - Denver/Englewood, CO / May 2023

This was a fantastic format. It is my first time doing a live course online and I loved it! No changes at all! Can’t wait to use this in real life. Glad I have notes to refer to??

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Oct 2022

I thoroughly enjoyed the information and format. Julie did a great job of presenting the topic in an accessible way. Thank you!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Oct 2022

presenter was awesome and knowledgeable - would be more helpful to have a feeding therapist present/co-present as well to give additional examples related to what OT/SLP see in treatment versus PT examples and to be able to answer some of the more OT/SLP specific dysphagia questions that came up in Q&A

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Oct 2022

I would love to watch videos of the instructor during an actual tx session using SEMG and especially SEMG/VMS.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2022

    Very informative course material.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2022

Excellent presenter - significant knowledge base - will take more courses because this one was excellent!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2022

Overall really great! So glad live steam was an option. I really appreciate all the CIAO does to support SLPs!!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2022

Wish there was more time focused on the lab aspect of the course and less on the background/refresher portion. Since this is an "advanced" level course, most people understand the principles behind NMES and I felt like we had to rush at the end to get through all the lab portions.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2022

Thank you so much! What a fantastic course. I learned so much!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2022

    Great course!

    - Gulf Breeze, FL / Feb 2022

good sense of humor-incorporating jokes into presentation. More time for practice with each of the different modalities, less time spent on research. Despite this having to be virtual, was still easy to see device and it's functions.

    - Gulf Breeze, FL / Feb 2022

Thank you for saying that about this course not being used in place of the renewal of Vital Stim. I would have been operating under that impression.

    - Gulf Breeze, FL / Feb 2022

Include pediatric patients in Vital Stim plus course and reference “how to” step by step videos like in the course for future viewing. Thanks! Great presenter and good information.

    - Gulf Breeze, FL / Feb 2022

Great course. Good pace of presentation.

    - Gulf Breeze, FL / Feb 2022

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2021

well done - smooth and informative, speaker interactive and engaging

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2021

I would encourage all attendees to use FireFox! Google Chrome did not work well.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2021

Thank you for a very thorough course.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

    excellent course

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2021

Overall, I enjoyed the course and will be coming back for the revamped DINES portion. I do think review of the literature is very important and should not have been skipped. I would like to hear more about NMES theory and hope there is a course on that in the future. I am excited about NMES technology, but our field has a long way to go!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2021

I was not aware we needed a reference electrode (or what they even were!) prior to the course so I did not have one with which to participate in the final set of labs. In the future, especially for livestreams, it would be helpful to know that ahead of time to be fully prepared and able to participate to the fullest extent.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Feb 2021

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jul 2020

During the lab maybe have a countdown timer when the participants are working independently. It was very difficult to determine if my computer was frozen or if it was still independent lab time because it was just silent.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jul 2020

I'd like to hear more about how it relates to the pediatric population. It was very heavily adult-based.

Prior to the course a checklist of materials to have on hand (e.g device, types of electrodes, etc) would be helpful Allowing participants time to place electrodes before beginning examples/labs Exam did not seem to correspond with what was focused on during the lectures

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Mar 2020

I wish I would've had VitalStim plus unit present during course, but we did not have it available to us yet. I liked John's style of presentation!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2020

Really enjoyed John as a presenter.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2020

This course was intensive. Definitely would have be easier to have a device in hand for the labs. However I am grateful the instructor offered contact information for follow up after the course.

When purchasing VitalStim Plus clinicians should be made aware that they need to take this training. Otherwise the manual that the machine comes with is not helpful.

I love that this class was online and I didn't have to travel. Although, I still get more out of classes in person and having a partner for the labs-especially for this seminar. The end of the seminar went too fast? trying to get done? Still an awesome class to take.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2019

I stated neutral in self assessment because I know I need some practice before being truly capable; however, I am confident that I have been given the tools to become capable. Appreciate the research provided, please don't reduce that portion of the course, it is essential. Since completion of the basic course is a pre-requisite, I think a handout of current placements/other significant changes should be provided for optimal use of the training provided. Obviously, that information will be covered when we renew, but for those of us caught in between, it would be very helpful.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2019

thank you for offering as Live stream

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2019

My original vitalstim course was in Dallas (May 2018) with Jodie as the presenter. I was so thrilled to find out she was the instructor for this course as well. She has a wealth of dysphagia knowledge across all population/ages and I feel like that is so important for teaching others! Thank you!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Sep 2019

Kelly did a great job, this is the first time I took a life stream webinar, I will do it again. Thank you

Kelly Salmon was a very effective Vital Stim Instructor. I will seek out courses she teaches in the future. Post Vital Stim courses I do not feel I am as competent as post other courses. I strongly believe Vital Stim is beneficial (I order a lot of Vital Stim products for our hospital) I would like to breeze through testing because I have already learned the material. However, a lot of my learning is studying from the test questions POST the courses. I avoid Vital Stim courses for this reason but would love to feel more competent with its use. I would appreciate initials of muscles, techniques, measurements, etc be more clearly spelled out in all Vital Stim courses. Especially in testing, please use initials and also spell out to clarify the questions.

    Thanks for a great course

Jodie was great, very personable, patient and receptive to questions.

Great course. Thanks for offering it live stream.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2018

great instructor! she is very knowledgeable and presented information clearly and organized

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Nov 2018

Jodie did an excellent job of answering questions, giving examples, and demonstrating concepts visually and verbally. It was sometimes difficult to follow her instructions for how to sequence selection options from the device. It might take more practice to coordinate showing the device screen for the online students, and walking through the steps more slowly to give us time to follow along. It would have also been nice to discuss the different features and pros and cons of using each in more depth, but it seems maybe there isn't enough research to discuss this yet? Overall- this course was a very good experience.

I loved being able to take this as a live course from the comfort of my own home. I realize that some courses are more hands on and can't have this option, but for when it's appropriate, I am happy to see that it is offered. You all did a great job fielding and answering questions.

GREAT COURSE!!! The set up was great, the presenter....everyone involved did a great job! It has been many years since I have taken a CIAO course but loved this one so much I will be back!!! I love the live streaming option.

Yorick was the best. A lot of information gone over but he made it understandable.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2018

Thank you for making my first live webinar experience a good one!!!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2018

This was so helpful, an excellent balance of review and new learning. The webinar style was convenient and very appropriate for the information and labs.

very good. Yorick is a fluid speaker; certainly brings the PT perspective to the course and program, which ST has needed for years. He uses examples well and clearly knows the device! starting off with such advanced questions from the audience: gave a picture of audience knowledge however I wonder if all participants were able to keep up/ follow along; perhaps save some ?? for after lunch break> Im trained since 2004: This was a great review and showed the advancement of NMES in our field. well done.

Always appreciate how professional and kind all of the staff is at Ciao! What a wonderful team!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Aug 2018

IT was nice to learn about the new device and how to utilize it. However as an advanced, practicing clinician, it is frustrating to ask a clinical question and the instructor not to be able to answer since he is unfortunately not an SLP. Please consider having a clinical SLP join him or give the class. I look forward to the clinical follow up with an SLP/ NMES advance group thanks!

Thoroughly enjoyed, as I do all CIAO courses! The speakers are always AMAZING!!!

Excellent course with strong focus on content paired with meaningful definitions. thank you!

Very well organized course. LOVE being able to learn new treatment modalities without getting on an airplane and leaving my kids. THANK YOU!

I thoroughly enjoyed this course today. Learned alot of great information. This is definitely something that could benefit my outpatient dysphagia patients.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jun 2018

Staff was very helpful with problems that arose during the live streaming session. I experienced some difficulty with my laptop during the session and the staff contacted me with the information I had missed! So very helpful throughout the course.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

The livestream option for this one day course was great! I could not have afforded to travel for this course which means we would have likely not purchased the unit (would have stuck with our traditional VitalStim units). But when I was able to take the course right from my office and have the course fee credited for purchasing the new VitalStim Plus unit, my hospital was in favor of purchasing the more advanced equipment!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

Thank you awesome course, awesome presentation.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

In general a good course, but I was disappointed that it was not offered as a live course that I could physically attend. I found that watching the course on a computer did not facilitate my learning of the material anywhere near as much as I would have learned if I had been physically present.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

I appreciated the opportunity to take the course without traveling. I would suggest offering a pre-recorded version to give people more flexibility and the ability to go back and review the steps to implement the new skills as needed.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

Great course! Loved being able to Live-Stream!!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

Would have loved some more detailed information regarding specific pt populations.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

Overall EXCELLENT presentation with Yorick! Thank you. Please consider having another trained clinician to quickly answer duplicate questions or simple tech issues. Please have the questions to be related to the the use of the device or material being presented..

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

I enjoyed the course. I learned new skills. As a mother of 3, I would choose to use Live stream again in the future.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Apr 2018

I could not get rid of noise in the EMG signal during the session, was very frustrated, and unable to absorb all the information. During break, I went to a different room, away from computer, and was able to get it to work. Would be useful to use polls to know when participants have completed a task, so you know we are all ready to move forward, or how many are having trouble!

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2018

I needed bigger course slides (they were difficult to read)-especially since the instructor didn't review them all.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2018

Keep up the great work . Love the LIVE CEU's. This is something that needs to be continued.

    - Live Streaming or Studio Audience, FL / Jan 2018

I think the course could be cut much shorter. The first half was review from the VitalStim Course. Only the second half of the course was beneficial for new learning.
