Course Description

Treating and Managing Dysphagia with Dementia I

Treating and Managing Dysphagia with Dementia is a two part series for physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists. Each part may be taken independently. This series focuses on the variables associated with cognitively impaired patients, dysphagia instruction and memory functions necessary for learning and dysphagia stimulation programming.
Part 2 describes dysphagia management therapy based on the patients diagnosis, stage and memory difficulties. Specific therapeutic approaches will be described in detail and will be combined with examples of treatment for dysphagia. In addition, specific disorders such as Alzheimers, frontotemporal dementia, picks disease, vascular dementia, Parkinsons and Huntingtons disease will be highlighted. Each of these specific diseases will include a description of the prominent dysphagia symptoms associated with that disease as well as recommended therapeutic strategies for dysphagia management. There will also be a discussion of neurotransmitters, medications affecting dysphagia, risk factors, feeding dependency, normal brain aging, medications affecting memory and vitamins/nutrients and herbs influencing dementia.

    - Forney, TX / May 2022

Would love to see some treatments with patients

    - Bluff City, TN / Apr 2022

I appreciate the good explanation of how to use spaced retrieval in coordination with chaining and chunking to focus on things such as safety issues for use of walker and also for improving recall for use of compensatory strategies for swallowing.

    - Richmond, IN / Dec 2020

Was hoping to learn more techniques, and the techniques that were mentioned were assumed to be known (e.g., chin tuck). More examples would have been very helpful, it's one of the ways I learn best when I can apply the information in a practical example.

    - Fremont, CA / Aug 2020

    The instructor was very thorough.

    - Fort Worth, TX / Aug 2019

More swallowing-relevant intervention examples would be appreciated.

This course was extremely useful and, in addition to the first part of the course, has really helped me gain some new perspective and ideas for therapy. Thank you!
