Course Description

Dysphagia is a frequently under reported and under-diagnosed condition present in over 15 million American adults. The condition occurs mostly after stroke but other disease states and even normal aging may contribute to its onset. The impact of dysphagia on patients, families and healthcare settings is significant. Treatment options to date are limited but recently a new approach has proven very successful. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) has received significant attention by dysphagia professionals ever since the FDA cleared VitalStim Therapy for the treatment of dysphagia. Thousands of therapists have received training and numerous positive reports are received but lots of misconceptions and questions remain among therapists. How does it work? Is there data to support its use?
This presentation will analyze the financial, emotional and social consequences of dysphagia. It will review current use of NMES by Speech Language Pathologists in the treatment of dysphagia. A background will be presented on the physical properties of electrotherapy and a working model will be presented that explains some of the neurophysiological aspects of electrotherapy used to strengthen the muscles of the swallowing system. Published and emerging research efforts will be reviewed and discussed. Indications, precautions and contraindications will be reviewed and the pros and cons of using this modality in dysphagia management will be discussed.

Disclosure: This course will only discuss information regarding the use of VitalStim Therapy. When this course was created there was no other similar device available.

    - Glenside, PA / Oct 2024

This was an excellent review for me and I enjoyed hearing about the studies of patients who were or were not diagnosed with dysphagia and knew/did not know it was treatable, and the reference to the Ludlow article. The latter study is one I’ve struggled with as the physical finding were contrary to expectation. I’m glad that this was addressed even if it was just a quick mention.

    - Springfield, IL / Jul 2022

The presenter did a nice job of presenting this topic. I did not learn this depth of dysphagia and treatment in my school coursework and was very pleased to learn new things. I thought he had a very nice pace, and I found that a lot of information was still fairly relevant despite this video being 10+ years old now. Thank you!

This is new information for me as my experience is in early intervention.

    - Gulfport, MS / Feb 2019

Yorick was a fantastic presenter! I always learn information better with his approach because he is skillful at taking cumbersome or complex information and simplifying it down to a level that is more easily understood. However, two of the test questions were unfair or structured unfairly. For example one of the questions asked about the cost of a PEG tube for one year and this information was never discussed during the presentation whatsoever nor was there a slide for it on my course manual.

    - Rupert, ID / Dec 2018

Great reinforcement for use of NMES
