Course Description
The 1987 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act initiated nursing home regulation. Skilled nursing facilities must comply with all regulations or they risk fines, poor state survey ratings and even closure. One arena in which nursing homes are utilizing therapists to meet the federal regulations is in restraint reduction. In moving towards a restraint free environment, the best approach utilizes a multidisciplinary Restraint Reduction Committee. Therapists play a unique role on the committee by assessing patients for balance and ambulation deficits, positioning issues, wound care and prevention and contracture management. Therapists are often asked to provide alternative positioning devices in lieu of restraints to promote safety. The committee implements trials of alternatives to restraints and a systematic process of restraint reduction is achieved.
