Course Description
Medical errors are one of the Nations leading causes of death and injury. A recent report by the Institute of Medicine estimates that nearly 100,000 people die in the United States each year as the result of medical errors. This means that more people die from medical errors than from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS. And of course, this does not take into account the injuries and compounding issues of law suits. In an effort to make the healthcare system safer for patients and caregivers, therapists are being educated in preventing medical errors. This course will provide information and guidelines beneficial to therapists in the rehab setting by explaining Root Cause Analysis, mapping out error reduction strategies and prevention, and providing guidelines for patient safety in the following areas:
- Root Cause Analysis (.25hr)
- Tips used to educate your patients to help prevent medical errors (.25hr)
- Patient Bill of Rights (.25hr)
- Criteria for appropriate referrals to therapy (.25hr)
- Precautions/contraindications of treatments including modalities, orthopedics and Dysphagia (.5hr)
- Documentation guidelines for smart communication including progress notes, discharges, restorative and interdisciplinary communication
- Pharmacological side effects pertinent to rehab (.5hr)
