Course Description

Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) is a new diagnosis that not only encompasses dysphagia, but also dysfunction in medical, nutritional, psychological, and/or feeding skills domains. Feeding therapy providers are seeing a rise in this population. Outcomes are more successful with the right skills to assess and treat infants with feeding challenges. This course will discuss the comorbidities of PFD, caloric fortification, observations of distress, positioning, and the four domains associated with this diagnosis (nutritional, psychological, medical, and feeding). The instructor will focus on infant feeding safety, effectiveness, and efficiency as well. Participants will gain an understanding of the implications of breast/chest-feeding with PFD in infants. The course material will include assessments and referral processes for PFD. The course will round out with a case study to help bring it all together.

Course Requirements:
  • Computer with internet and working speakers/sound are required for this course.
  • Course must be completed within 30 days of activation (activate course within 6 months of purchase).

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Categorize common contributors of Pediatric Feeding Disorders (PFD) in infants within the four different domains.
  • Describe the rationale for high calorie or fortification if necessary.
  • Identify social determinants of health areas negatively impacted in families with PFD.
  • List skilled intervention strategies that can be utilized to support attachment when working with families and infant dyads.
  • Evaluate distress cues of infant feeding as well as determine the suck swallow-breath ratio pattern as typical or atypical for infants.
  • Describe how positioning change during infant bottle and breast presentations can support safe feeding practices and decrease distress cues.
  • Identify skilled intervention strategies that can be made in real-time to improve the efficiency of an infant's feeding.
  • Select an appropriate assessment tools or screening measures based on concerns and the infant's age.

Amanda Graves

SLPD, CCC-SLP. CLC

Dr. Amanda Graves, SLPD, CCC-SLP, CLC graduated with a clinical doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology from the Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions with a focus on clinical education and pediatric feeding. She works as a speech clinical manager and feeding clinical mentor for a private pediatric home health agency in Texas. Providing quality education related to pediatric feeding, specifically to therapists with limited access, became Dr. Graves’ passion after moving to a rural part of Texas and experiencing the difference in the care her own premature daughter received and the lack of learning opportunities available. She has 16 years of experience in pediatrics with the last 12 years specifically in pediatric feeding. Dr. Graves guest lectures at Texas Tech University Health Science Center and has presented at multiple local and state conferences.
