Course Description

This introductory level course offers clinicians utilizing electrotherapy with knowledge to maximize treatment outcomes from the use of electrotherapy in the rehabilitation of patients with pain. Various neurophysiological mechanisms of pain and pain management will be discussed, including the gate control theory, the release of endogenous opioids, trigger points and sympathetically maintained pain. Specific electrotherapy protocols will be discussed, including the choice of best waveform, best waveform parameters and best practices on how to incorporate electrotherapy in the treatment session.

Course Requirements:
  • Computer with internet and working speakers/sound are required for this course.
  • Course must be completed within 30 days of activation (activate course within 6 months of purchase).
  • An online multiple-choice quiz (80% passing score) and submission of an online evaluation form are required for successful completion.
  • A certificate of completion will be available to print immediately after course is successfully completed.

OT Process: Evaluation, Intervention

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the theoretical background to the management of pain using surface electrical stimulation
  • List common conditions for which electrotherapy is indicated as a pain management approach
  • Describe the electrotherapy protocols appropriate for the management of acute pain, chronic pain, pain due to trigger point activity and pain due to sympathetic hyperactivity
  • Select the most appropriate modality and parameter settings to obtain the desired physiological response
  • Describe the relationship between target sensory neuron diameter and stimulation frequency and phase duration

Reviews

WOW!!! as a speech therapist who finds a small but consistent segment of patients unable to tolerate NMES for swallow/ Bells Palsy recovery due to pain, I am amazed that ST's are licensed to treat with NMES without more training in afferent nerves structures. I plan to take the neurobiology pain course next, but hope the author will consider adding a module or new course NMES course for ST's to increase results/quality of care for NMES. Best class I have taken in a long time.
