Course Description


This is an introductory level course covering the essentials of clinical ethics in Speech-Language Pathology based on the latest version of the ASHA Code of Ethics. Speech-language pathologists across all service areas are faced daily with higher demands for productivity in a "do less with more" environment. Fundamental ethical terms, definitions and principles will form the basis for providing a guideline in order for SLPs to make informed, ethical decisions in their clinical practice or research endeavors. Ethical dilemmas will be discussed.

Course Requirements:
  • Computer with internet and working speakers/sound are required for this course.
  • Course must be completed within 30 days of activation (activate course within 6 months of purchase).
  • An online multiple-choice quiz (80% passing score) and submission of an online evaluation form are required for successful completion.
  • A certificate of completion will be available to print immediately after course is successfully completed.
  • SLPs - ASHA CEUs may be obtained by completing the online ASHA form and checking the "Report to ASHA" box.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define ethical terminology contained within the ASHA Code of Ethics
  • Identify and navigate ethical dilemmas in their practice
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ethical decision making using the framework and guidelines of the ASHA Code of Ethics

Susan Mayfield-Cole

M.A. CCC-SLP, NDC

Susan Mayfield Cole, MA CCC-SLP, NDC has been a VitalStim user as well as a CIAO instructor team member since 2003. She brings to our team an extensive teaching and clinical resume. Susan continues to serve as a a VitalStim Therapy Specialty Program instructor, an online instructor for the MBS: The Clear Picture course and is also a webcast designer/presenter. She holds the NDC certification for NMES. Susan previously held clinical and administrative positions at Frye Regional Medical Center, Graystone Ear, Nose and Throat Associates and Carolina ENT Head and Neck Surgery Center. She is currently the owner of Specialized Therapy Consulting and contracts with a variety of educational and clinical settings, including Twin City Medical Mobile Diagnostics, PLLC. Susan has held faculty positions at Appalachian State University and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute where she taught courses in Ethics for the SLP-A program. She and her husband share a large family and when not working they enjoy fly fishing around the country.

Roger Cole

MD, MA, FACS

Roger D. Cole, MD, MA, FACS is Chief of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and is the Clinical Ethics Fellow for the W. G. (Bill) Hefner VAMC in Salisbury, Charlotte and Kernersville, North Carolina. He attended medical school at Bowman Gray School of Medicine/Wake Forest University and completed his Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. After completing his military service in the United States Navy, Roger was in private Otolaryngology practice for 12 years in Hickory, North Carolina. He has served as the physician representative to the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Audiologist and Speech Language Pathologists form 2002-2005. He joined the Veterans Health Administration in 2009 and was selected by the Veterans Administration to complete the Clinical Medical Ethics Fellowship at The University of Chicago in May 2011 and has served on the Ethics Committee of the AAO/HNS-F since that time. He received his Masters of Arts in Bioethics from Wake Forest University in 2013 and holds an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Section of Otolaryngology at Wake Forest School of Medicine and Assistant Professor Department of Surgery-Otolaryngology at The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is active in teaching medical ethics to medical students, residents and providing continuing medical education throughout the Veterans Health Administration.
