Course Description

Jennifer Jones' new course was created due to multiple requests for a course that addresses assessing and treating children with more involved feeding disorders. The complex medical issues and frustrating behavioral refusals that lead to profound dysphagia are discussed based on current research. The process of completing an educated, differential diagnosis, developing the appropriate treatment plan and performing treatment techniques are the focal points of this course. Dr. Jones teaches a step-by-step process in increasing preferred foods for the pickiest little eater and also how to treat pharyngeal dysphagia without the luxury of the instrumental exam. The class includes case presentations with treatment protocols. This course is designed to provide therapists with the tools to treat difficult dysphagia clients immediately upon returning to work.

Course Requirements:
  • Computer with internet and working speakers/sound are required for this course.
  • Course must be completed within 30 days of activation (activate course within 6 months of purchase).
  • An online multiple-choice quiz (80% passing score) and submission of an online evaluation form are required for successful completion.
  • A certificate of completion will be available to print immediately after course is successfully completed.
  • SLPs - ASHA CEUs may be obtained by completing the online ASHA form and checking the "Report to ASHA" box.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify 3 medical etiologies that can lead to pharyngeal dysphagia and management techniques for each disorder.
  • Describe 3 possible clinical signs of pharyngeal dysphagia in pediatrics.
  • Explain the 3-Step process of increasing preferred foods through pairing and chaining.
  • List 2 primary medical etiologies that can lead to long-term food refusal and discuss management for these etiologies.
  • Discuss 3 behavior modifications to increase appropriate behaviors.
  • Relate at least 2 treatment techniques to various disorders of range of motion, strength and endurance of oral musculature.

Dr. Jones is an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist with over 25 years of experience. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Deaf Education and Elementary Education from Converse College. Dr. Jones completed her Masters in Speech Pathology (M.S.P.) and her Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from the University of South Carolina. She is an advocate of continued education and attends national conferences on a regular basis, which has earned her the ACE award throughout her entire career.

After working in the hospital, clinic and in-home settings, she ventured into private practice in January of 2001 by founding Therapeutic Interventions of Georgia, Inc., which has grown exponentially over the past years. Currently, Dr. Jones primarily works with children who have oral-motor, feeding and swallowing impairments. She also has extensive training with cochlear implants and sensory disorders. Dr. Jones believes strongly in the whole child approach and completed her certification in Neurodevelopmental Treatment this past year. She applies the knowledge from her certifications to work with a variety of disabilities, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), dysphagia, genetic syndromes, receptive and expressive language disorders and hearing impairment.

Dr. Jones taught Adult and Pediatric Dysphagia in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Carolina for 6 years. She is also a lecturer nationally and internationally on adult and pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders. Community involvement is also a priority to Dr. Jones. As a result of decreased funding for therapy services in the state of Georgia, she founded The Foundation for Therapeutic Options, Inc. in 2006, which is a private, non-profit organization that raises money to pay for therapy services for children in need. Dr. Jones resides in North Augusta, South Carolina with her husband Dr. Gordon Jones and their children.

I appreciated that the instructor in this course is not afraid to give parents the courage and confidence to be in charge of feeding their children and to present more of a middle ground between traumatic force-feeding experiences that we all want to avoid and allowing the child to have complete control to their own eventual detriment.
